ABERDEEN INDIAN RESTAURANT RECOGNISED AT BRITISH CURRY AWARDS
An Indian restaurant in Aberdeen has once again been recognised on the British stage.

The Light of Bengal, on Rose Street, finished as runner up in the Best Spice Restaurant in Scotland category at the coveted 12th annual British Curry Awards.
Noor Ahmed, the restaurant’s owner, said: “I was quite disappointed not to win the main award, but runners-up is not that bad.

“We were the holders of Best in Scotland from the British Curry Awards in 2014, we won it. We were runners-up in 2013 and 2015 too.”

On the eatery’s continued success, he said: “It’s the hard work and dedication to the restaurant.

“It’s not only me, it’s the whole team. As a staff, we’re not related, but we work as a family. That is the main success of the restaurant.

“Anything is possible if you have the right team.”

Nominations for the awards are made by members of the public.

Mr Ahmed said: “The people of Aberdeen have supported us over the years and continue to do so.

“It’s their nominations that get us there in the first place.”

Often referred to as the curry industry’s Oscars, the British Curry Awards 2016 were hosted by comedian and impressionist Alistair McGowan and welcomed luminaries from the worlds of politics, sport, film, television and the arts, as well as celebrity chefs, restaurant owners and their staff from across the country.

The ceremony took place on November 28 in London.

In a video message at the event, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “This is also a showcase for the talent, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of Britain’s curry houses.

“Today, there are around 10,000 restaurants employing 100,000 staff, with an annual turnover of £4.3 billion.

“This represents a Great British success story, a terrific industry which creates jobs, promotes growth, contributes to the UK economy and raises monies for charities across Britain and around the world.”
